“If we put X amount of money in our Roth IRA each month, do you know how much money we’d make by the time we retire?!”
I nodded, exchanging the excitement with my investing-loving friends.
“We’ve also thought about investing money into rental properties and eventually land. There are so many ways to invest your money wisely to be more than well-off in the future.”
I agreed. The opportunities in America are endless, and my husband and I have been excited, too, about investing.
One thing is for certain, we are all sowing into something every single day. Whether we are a finance-guru or not, there are many ways we invest ourselves on a regular basis. We sow our time, our money, and our energy into ourselves, things, or people, but are we really sowing for fruitful harvest?
As I listened to my dear friends speak with passion about their investment ideas and opportunities, I couldn’t help but hear the voice of Solomon in Ecclesiastes when he said, “All of it is meaningless, a chasing after the wind” (2:17). My thoughts weren’t that my friends were bad for being passionate about multiplying their wealth, but I had already learned how quickly wealth and riches will perish.
I don’t want to sow into something that isn’t eternal.
I could sow my money into investment opportunities, multiply my fortune, and then pass away at my peak. Then what? My fortune remains on earth, and I step into eternity.
In addition, I could sow my time into my work, my to-do list, my endless extra-curricular activities, or my wants and desires, but will my storehouse in heaven be full of harvest?
What we do or do not do right now has eternal impact, and this truth has completely rewired the way I live my life.
Don’t get me wrong, I have loved all things investments, finance, and accounting since I was young. But, if I wanted to reap an eternal harvest, I knew I needed to find Kingdom opportunities to sow my money into. My favorite financial investment I make in the Kingdom is through my local church. Tithing, giving, and donating to my church means I have chosen to buy stock in the Kingdom where I am always guaranteed a return. Always.
The Bible says, “Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously” (1 Corinthians 9:6).
But what if I didn’t just sow my money? What if I sowed every resource I have been given into every area of my life? I don’t know about you, but when the harvest time comes, I want there to be so much fruit coming from my sowing that my family is reaping the benefits for a hundred generations!
We as Christians have become lazy. We like to do the minimum and go about our business, unaware that our business is sowing into nothing of eternal value. At some point, we have to make the decision to sow generously into the Kingdom during each season of our lives.
If you’re married, sow God’s love into your marriage. Speak kindly and serve willingly. Sow seeds of generosity and faithfulness. Make the decision to shut down every sinful temptation and sow into self-control and purity. Sow affirmation liberally throughout the hours of the day. Keep the Word of God as your foundation and let it be the Fountain of Life in your marriage.
If you have children, sow the Father’s love generously in their lives. Teach them the miracles of God and everything He is to you. Sow patience, wisdom, and kindness into their hearts that will produce the fruit of godly character. Sow into their bodies by giving them nutrients and vitamins to help build a strong and healthy body and a healthy relationship with food. Show them unconditional love and be an example of a loving and Christ-honoring marriage. Teach them skills that will allow them to navigate through THEIR society, not the society we, as parents, grew up in. Sow into your children, for this will produce fruit for generations to come.
If you’re single, sow into your spiritual health. Feed your soul with Biblical truths, surround yourself with Christ-loving people, and weed out every poisoned song, movie, show, or book that has been stealing your harvest. Sow into your physical health. Feed your body nutrients, vitamins, and water; this is pleasing to the Lord. Rid your diet of the chemicals and ingredients that are destroying the body. YOUR body. Sow into your mental and emotional health. Talk to a godly friend. Give and receive prayer. Be open about your situations and take time to heal.
Sow your time investing in souls that are lost. Sow your energy serving others in the calling God destined you for. Sow your money into His Kingdom through your local church.
There may be many ways to sow ourselves in the American dream, but there are no limits to how we can sow into the Kingdom.
One may produce a prosperous life on earth, but the other will give us a prosperous life for eternity.
Those who sow into the Kingdom from the Kingdom will reap their blessings, now and for eternity.
